Nouns in the Ukrainian language can have one of three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. As in other European languages like Spanish and German, the gender of a noun also applies to the adjectives that modify that noun.
Although exceptions exist, the gender of a word typically depends on the ending of the noun. I will present the most typical word endings for each gender and then provide examples of word endings that can apply to either gender.
Masculine Nouns
Masculine nouns tend to end in consonants. Almost all words ending in hard consonants are masculine.

стіл | table |
Feminine Nouns
Feminine nouns tend to end in -я or -а.
донька | daughter |

Neuter Nouns

місто | city |
поле | field |
